About Me

I’m Shemira (Sheh-my-ra), a former teacher and career changer trying to find the perfect work/life balance, and help others while doing so. I enjoy a good slice-of-life tv show, homemaking, reading, and quality time with family and friends. I am from the Bronx, NYC, the best borough, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise! I currently reside in the Midwest of the USA.

My Story

I was born and raised in NYC by Caribbean immigrant parents. I studied Political Science, Black Studies, and Anthropology in college and later went on to earn my Master of Science in education while I was teaching (10/10 Recommend). My mother was a teacher, and although I have left the classroom, I know that she is happy to have had at least one of her children teach, even though it was only for a season!

I grew up with a vivid imagination, which I attribute to being a bookworm and my father introducing me to anime. In times of loneliness or being lost in thought, I would read, and later on, I found a love for storytelling. This manifested itself in my writing skits/plays and later anime-based fanfiction during my adolescence. I have tried to start blogs numerous times but I have not been able to be consistent. I hope that Be Hippie-ish changes that. Living my life and writing about it is super healing and cathartic, and I love it. I am challenging myself to remain disciplined with this but still have fun.

My friends describe me, especially my style, as “hippie.” I think I would fall into the “quirky black girl” trope for sure. I have no problem with that, but I am also a black woman that enjoys playing video games, cooking, baking, caring for children, wearing makeup sometimes, equity, and overall just trying to be a decent human being.

For years I felt that other people would assign all these traits to me based on their perception of me, largely based on my looks. I don’t believe that I have to have a smile plastered on my face all the time or be slim/thin to get the love and respect that I deserve. In fact, showing up as my full, authentic self has gotten me to where I am today, and that place isn’t bad at all.

I hope that my site can be a place where all humans, but especially black women of all shapes and sizes, find community, inspiration, and healing.
